An amendment to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 was made through the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Act, 2021. The amendment came in to effect from March 2021. With completion of a year, CMS as a research partner to FRHS India conceptualized and conducted a multi-state research study to assess the awareness about the key features of the amendment as well as other related issues like, is abortion legal in India, gestation period among both married and unmarried women and different stakeholders as well as changes in practices, if any due to the amendment made. The study further explored the efforts made to sensitize and for capacity building of service providers, both medical doctors and frontline workers, to make them familiar with different provisions in the act.
