As part of the ongoing National Lecture Series organised by CMS in collaboration with Nehru Memorial Museum & Library (NMML) eminent scientist Dr R A Mashelkar delivered the 11th national lecture titled "On launching an Indian Inclusive Innovation Initiative". The lecture was presided over by Prof. P V Indiresan, former Director, IIT Madras. Chairman CMS, Dr N Bhaskara Rao was also present on the occasion.
Dr Mashelkar started his lecture by defining Innovation as the successful exploitation of a new idea. He emphasized and explained why innovation is crucial for the development of the country. He discussed how innovation leads to:
His central theme in the lecture was how to achieve "More from less for more" through innovation. He defined inclusive innovation as "Getting more from less for more and more people". To make this concept comprehensible he cited several examples of innovation in the health and automobile sector. Dr Mashelkar emphasized that in a country with 4 billion people having income less than $2 a day, we need not 'low cost' but 'ultra low cost solutions' and not just 'affordability' but 'extreme affordability'.
